US Military Operation on Caracas Fuels Anxieties of Potential Greenland Annexation.

The latest US-led military action in Venezuela and the detention of its president have ignited apprehension regarding America's ambitions on Greenland. Members of the former president's political movement have reportedly focused on the strategically important island following the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Outrage

Merely a short time after the initiation of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent right-wing podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential aide, posted a suggestive map. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, with the cryptic message: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to absorb the resource-abundant land, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and firm condemnation from Denmark's officials.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that the kingdom had significantly increased its defence spending this year, allocating a substantial amount specifically for Arctic and regional security. "And yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The situation were further complicated by the recent naming of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this envoy praised the administration's actions, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since returning to office, the American leader has repeatedly alarmed European partners with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is considered vitally strategic for defence and future resource extraction. It currently houses the northernmost US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a notable television interview, the leader declined to rule out the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes during growing global rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Friction and Indigenous Resistance

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of both Greenland delivered a joint and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a complex sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's residents seek self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously scant appetite to join the United States. The territory has had the option to declare sovereignty for many years.

Analyst Assessment: A Plausible Threat?

Military analysts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in military analysis admitted she had previously discounted the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she observed.
